Alissa Kempler, Esq.

Alissa Kempler, Esq., currently serves as an attorney in the Criminal Division, Office of Policy and Legislation, United States Department of Justice (“DOJ”), where she manages advocacy before the United States Sentencing Commission (“Commission”), drafts comment letters on proposed amendments to the Sentencing Guidelines, and prepares witnesses to testify before the Commission. She previously served as Senior Counsel and the Criminal Division’s inaugural Victim Policy Coordinator in the Division’s Front Office, advising on crime victims’ rights. She also served as counsel in the DOJ’s Office of Legal Policy, advising on violent crime reduction and judicial nominations. 

Before joining the Criminal Division, Ms. Kempler served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, where she prosecuted violent crime. She also served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office, where she prosecuted violent crime. 

In recognition of her work at the DOJ, Ms. Kempler has received the Attorney General’s Claudia J. Flynn Award for Professional Responsibility and the Assistant Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service.

Ms. Kempler earned her Bachelor of Arts from Tufts University and her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. She earned her Juris Doctor, cum laude, from The George Washington University Law School.
